Akihabara at night

Akihabara, aka Akihabara Electric Town, is the otaku cultural center of Tokyo. What is otaku? A Japanese term for people with obsessive interests, commonly anime and manga. Akihabara is also a shopping district for gamers and gadget enthusiasts with many shops selling video games (like Super Potato) and consumer goods. We couldn’t wait to visit and end our evening with the best tonkatsu in Tokyo!

In addition to all of the games and shopping, Akihabara is famous for their maid cafes where waitresses cosplay, dressed in maid costumes, act and treat customers as masters (and mistresses) rather than normal customers. We visited @Home and it was as weird as it sounds.

If you’re looking for delicious food in Akihabara, you must visit Marugo for their famous tonkatsu. Luckily we received the recommendation from our friends Christina and Rafaël and were not disappointed! Tonkatsu is a breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet topped with a special sauce (like a thick Worcestershire sauce), served with rice, shredded cabbage, and miso soup. Yum!

Worth the wait!

Our starters: Nikuyose (jellied meat broth) and gyutan (grilled beef tongue)

Once it becomes dark, Akihabara lights up and comes to life!
