São Miguel: Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire)

Lagoa do Fogo

Our last day on São Miguel we had beautiful, sunny weather – a welcome contrast from the misty, cloudy weather of the day before. Perfect for a trip to the island’s highest lake – Lagoa do Fogo, or Lake of Fire. Lagoa do Fogo is a crater lake within the Água de Pau Massif stratovolcano in the center of São Miguel.

Although I expected the Lagoa das Sete Cidades to be my favorite lake, Lagoa do Fogo was so breathtaking. Perhaps it’s because we had sunny weather, but it was really an amazing experience driving so high up to the top of the island to take in different view of the Lagoa do Fogo.

Chã da Macela is a forest reserve, so the entire area was beautiful
