Kaminarimon, aka the “Thunder Gate”
During our day out with Kyoko, we explored two wards of Tokyo: Asakusa and Sumida, both located in the northeast of Tokyo.

Entrance of the Tsukiji Fish Market
The Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo is the largest and busiest fish market in the world. The market opens most mornings at 3AM, so it’s recommended to visit when you first arrive and are still jet lagged. So we headed to Tsukiji for a sushi breakfast on our first full day!

Marcel
We finally made it to Marcel. After passing the restaurant many times and saying we should eat there one day, we finally did!

Our ferry to the Isle of Islay
Day Two we made our way from Glasgow to Kennacraig for the ferry to Port Ellen on the Isle of Islay. Before reaching Kennacraig, we stopped at Loch Goil and at the Fyne Ales Brewery for lunch and a tasting.
Koen and I spent last week in London. The last time I was in London with time to really explore was 10 years ago! So although I’d been before, it was really like visiting for the first time.

Koen’s organic salmon with herring caviar and couscous
This is now the second time we’ve celebrated Koen’s birthday at the Fiskebar! Located on the Marnixplaats in the “Zuid” neighborhood of Antwerp, this is the perfect lunch spot for fresh fish!

Magical Entrance
For Koen’s birthday dinner we visited Sir Anthony Van Dijck. I always do a bit of searching before deciding on a restaurant and I was so intrigued when I read that the chef, Marc Paesbrugghe, gave his two Michelin stars away.

Herring caviar and cream
Koen and I use New Year’s Eve and Day as an excuse to eat very luxuriously and indulgently. Every year we try to top the year before.
Day Four was our first day spent together with everyone. One of the big things everyone wanted to do while in Tuscany was to see the countryside, visit vineyards, and sample Chianti wines. After a bit of searching we decided on the Chianti Afternoon Wine Tour.
Day Five was our second to last full day in Copenhagen, so we needed to narrow down what we would still like to do. We decided to start the morning with brunch at Kalaset. Koen and I had looked up a lot of restaurants for brunch and Kalaset was always high up on the list. The menu isn’t typically Danish – it’s very continental, so pancakes, eggs, bacon, etc. I guess I should have known that because it’s located in Indre By, there wouldn’t be many locals. Honestly, I think Koen was the only non-American in the packed restaurant and only one of two guys. It was literally filled with American girls doing brunch with friends. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – I thought it was really funny. I just pretended to be Dutch and Koen and I had our own conversation while eavesdropping all the conversations around us. Who knew that studying abroad in Copenhagen is really great except for the lack of boys and is almost impossible to find a Danish boyfriend?
